The Application of Nano Barium Sulfate in Masterbatch Products

Nano barium sulfate has found innovative applications in the production of masterbatch products. It can replace various red, yellow, green, and blue pigments in polyolefin masterbatch. Through the use of colorimeters, the color strength, reflectance, and transmittance properties of films can be determined. It can also test sample products made from these masterbatches. This study aimed to understand how these alternatives affect the color performance of masterbatch products. The results show that the substitution degrees of nano barium sulfate of different color pigments are different. The average substitution rate is about 20%. This substitution has no negative impact on the color of the product. It also greatly reduces production costs.

1)Introduction to Masterbatch

Masterbatch is a vital component in the plastics industry. It is primarily dependent on fillers for its production. The significance of this product in the plastic and rubber industry arises from its inherent characteristics. However, can precipitated barium sulfate serve as a filler in masterbatch products? When choosing pigments for masterbatches, one must consider three main aspects:

1. The pigment reaction

The pigment (barium sulfate or other pigments) should not react with resins and various additives. It should exhibit strong solvent resistance, minimal migration, and excellent heat resistance. In other words, pigments in masterbatches should not engage in chemical reactions. For example, carbon black can control the curing reaction of polyester plastics. It is unsuitable for use with carbon black pigments in polyester.

2. The pigment dispersibility and coloration

The pigment should have good dispersibility and coloration. Uneven pigment dispersion can impact the visual appearance and performance of the products. Poor coloration can result in increased pigment usage, driving up material costs. The same pigment may have varying dispersibility and coloration when used with different resins. So pigment selection should be more careful.

3. Other properties of pigments

It’s essential to understand other properties of pigments. For plastics used in food and children’s toys, pigments must be non-toxic. For plastics used in electrical applications, pigments with good electrical insulation properties should be chosen. For outdoor plastic products, pigments with excellent weathering and aging resistance should be selected.

2)Application of Nano Barium Sulfate in Different Masterbatches

1. Application in White Polyolefin Masterbatches

Nano barium sulfate can replace part of titanium dioxide. When it is used in polyolefin white masterbatch. It studies its effect on the color properties of white masterbatch. Films and sample products made from white masterbatch were used to measure the hiding power and whiteness. It is tested by using a photoelectric spectrophotometer and a spectrophotometric colorimeter. The pigment dispersion was quantitatively characterized using an image analyzer. The results show that when nano-BaS04 replaces 20% of Ti02 pigment, the hiding power of the product is greatly improved. The maximum whiteness improvement is 2.75%. At the same time, other properties of the white masterbatch remain basically unchanged. For Ti02 pigments with different crystal forms, the addition of nano-barium sulfate can improve the hiding power and whiteness of the products.

2. Application in Blue Polyolefin Masterbatches

Nano-barium sulfate and nano-calcium carbonate are used to replace different proportions of blue pigments in polyolefin masterbatch. Films and sample products made from these masterbatches. Color intensity and hiding power were measured using a colorimeter. Investigation of their effect on color performance. Both nano-calcium carbonate and nano-barium sulfate can replace some pigments without causing a decrease in the coloration of plastic products. In some cases, coloration is improved. And the dispersion of the system is enhanced. The application of nanometer barium sulfate in a polyolefin masterbatch is better than nanometer calcium carbonate.

3. Application in Red Polyolefin Masterbatches

Three different ultrafine BaSO4 products were used to replace varying proportions of red pigment in the polyolefin masterbatch. Use a microscope to observe the dispersion of the pigment. And use a colorimeter to measure the hiding power and coloration of films and sample products made from these masterbatches. The results show that ultrafine barium sulfate can replace part of the pigment without affecting the color performance of the final product. In some cases, it even improves color.

3) Safe Handling, Storage, and Applications of Nano Barium Sulfate

Barium sulfate is a versatile material. Its application range is diverse. Good storage is critical in every industry. We’ll explore the safe storage and handling practices for barium sulfate.

1. Storage Guidelines

When it comes to storing barium sulfate, following these guidelines ensures both safety and product integrity:

1.1. Storage Environment

Store barium sulfate in a cool, well-ventilated storage area to maintain its quality.

1.2. Away from Heat Sources:

Keep it away from open flames and heat sources, ensuring the product’s stability.

1.3. Separation

Store barium sulfate separately from flammable materials and reducing agents. Avoid mixing them to prevent potential reactions.

1.4. Leak Containment

Be prepared for contingencies. it is important to have suitable materials on hand to contain any potential leaks.

2. Handling Procedures

To safely handle barium sulfate, it’s essential to follow these operational procedures:

2.1. Enclosed Operations

Perform operations within enclosed spaces with local exhaust ventilation. Only trained personnel should engage in these activities, adhering strictly to operational protocols.

2.2. Respiratory Protection

Consider the use of self-contained filtering masks to protect against dust exposure. Minimize dust production and prevent contact with reducing agents.

2.3. Careful Handling

When transporting barium sulfate, ensure that handling is gentle. It can prevent damage to the packaging and any powder spillage.

2.4. Emergency Equipment

Equip the workplace with emergency response equipment. It is suitable for handling potential leaks from emptied containers.

3. Packaging Details

Barium sulfate is typically packaged in latex or woven bags lined with polyethylene plastic bags. Each bag contains a net weight of 25kg or 50kg. It should be stored in a dry storage area. Avoid storing it alongside colored materials to prevent potential color contamination. During transportation and handling, prioritize gentle and careful handling to avoid any packaging damage.

Our offered nano ultrafine barium sulfate is characterized by its low oil absorption and high filling capacity. This enables a reduction in paint production costs. It is suitable for water-based paints, primers, intermediate coatings, and oil-based paints. By replacing 10% to 25% of the titanium dioxide in water-based paints with our product, you can increase whiteness without reducing coverage.
