Refined High-Purity Ultrafine Quartz Powder (SiO2) Overview

Quartz-Powder

High purity and high white quartz powder make from natural quartz or fused quartz. It is refined through many processes, such as crushing, ball milling, flotation, pickling, and purification. It is a non-metallic silicon mineral powder. This kind of powder has high hardness, low oil absorption, easy dispersion and good anti-settling performance. Also, it has good fluidity and high stability. It is acid-resistant, corrosion-resistant, and scratch-resistant.

High purity quartz powder can resist temperature and corrosion. It has high insulation and low expansion properties. Also, its chemical properties are also very stable.( I have written an article with tile of “Top Ten Questions About Silicon Dioxide” to introduce its features.) So, it is widely used in silicone, potting glue and epoxy glue, dry hanging glue, AB glue and thermal conductive glue. It can also  used in floor paint, powder coatings and abrasive materials. Apart from this, it is also used in photovoltaic glass and electronic materials. Plastic and artificial quartz stones and polishing waxes are also used. High-purity quartz powder is often used in raw materials. Such as ceramics, water treatment filtrationandrubber, high-temperature casting, frit, glass, and fiberglass pipes.

1. Technical Analysis of Refined High-Purity Quartz Powder

1.1 High whiteness of 95-98, enhancing the product’s whiteness and transparency.

1.2 Excellent heat resistance and corrosion resistance, good insulation, and arc resistance.

1.3 High hardness and wear resistance. It can effectively improve the tensile. Compression and impact strength of the coating or cured product.

1.4 Excellent wetting ability and adsorption performance. It can be mixed easily without clumping. And its reasonable particle size distribution can effective reduce. Or reduce settling and stratification.

1.5 And its low oil absorption. can increase the critical pigment volume concentration of the paint. Reduce resin consumption and costs.

1.6 It also reduces the curing temperature of epoxy resin.

1.7 It reduces linear expansion and contraction coefficients during curing.

1.8 It ends internal stress and prevent cracking.

2. Characteristics of Refined High-Purity Quartz Powder

High purity, excellent whiteness, controllable and adjustable particle size, and uniform distribution.

Low ion content, low conductivity, excellent electrical insulation.

Mohs hardness of 7.0, providing high hardness, rigidity, and abrasion resistance.

Low oil absorption, low viscosity, good dispersibility, and flowability.

Refractive index of 1.54-1.55, low dispersion, outstanding optical performance.

Thermal expansion coefficient of 0.5*10-6/k, extremely low, withstands thermal shocks.

High insulation, non-conductive, thermal conductivity of 7.6 (w/mk), moderate thermal conductivity.

High strength, improving the scratch resistance of coatings.

Low dielectric constant and dielectric loss. An ideal filler for electronic and electrical products.

It has excellent weather resistance. so it is suitable for long-term use of paints, coatings, rubber and other products. Chemical stable, so it reacts only with HF and strong alkalis, not with any other substances.

3. Applications of Refined Quartz Powder

3.1 In paints and coatings

Refined quartz powder has unique functions that allow it to replace barium sulfate. And talc in formulas, so it also used in paints, primers, and anti-rust paints. It not only acts as a filler to increase volume, but it also can outstanding increase fineness. It can also improve the leveling performance. It also improves the film hardness of the paint. Reduces sanding time, and it enhances water resistance, rust resistance and corrosion resistance.

3.2 In Rubber Products

When refined quartz powder is full into materials. Such as natural rubber and butadiene rubber . The powder is easy to disperse and the mixing process performance is good. It has good rolling and extrusion properties. And it can increase the vulcanization speed of vulcanized rubber. It also has the effect of increasing the stickiness of rubber.  Especially ultra-fine silica powder (average particle size ≤ 3 μm). Which can replace part of the white carbon black in the rubber compound. It can improve the physical properties of products and reduce production costs. Silica micropowder (-2μm 60-70%)  used for in export-grade medicinal chlorobutyl rubber bottle stoppers . And in electrical insulating rubber shoes.

3.3 In Electrical Insulation Encapsulation Materials

Refined quartz powder  used as a filler in epoxy resin insulation encapsulation materials. It can obvious increase the filling amount. And also reduce the viscosity of the mixture system. It improves processing properties. And increases the permeability of the mixture to high-voltage electrical coils . Besides, it can also reduce the expansion coefficient of the cured product. And the shrinkage rate during the curing process. And it reduces the thermal tension difference between the mixture and the coil. It improves the thermal, electrical and mechanical properties of cured products.

3.4 In Plastic Products

Refined quartz powder is an ideal reinforcing agent for (PP), (PVC), and (PE). Not only does it have a larger filling volume, but it also has good tensile strength. When it made into masterbatch, it used for in PVC floor tiles to improve the wear resistance of the product. Microsilica powder used for in olefin resin films (dosage 10-12%). The powder is average dispersed and has good film-forming properties, and strong mechanical properties. Compared with plastic films produced with PCC as filler, it can reduce the infrared transmittance by more than 10%. It is most beneficial to the application. And promotion of agricultural shed films. It can also used for in fields such as the outer covering of wires and cables.

3.5 In Leather Products

Refined quartz powder used as a filler in the production of synthetic leather. When compared withlight calcium carbonate, activated calcium carbonate, and activated talc filled products. It has better strength, elongation and flexibility. It is also used in the production of battery plastic cases, with a filling volume of up to about 65%. The resulting product has a smooth surface, high hardness and acid resistance. Electrical insulation, deformation resistance and impact resistance.
