Understanding the Differences Between DTY, FDY, and POY

When it comes to synthetic fibers like polyester, there are three main types to know about DTY, FDY, and POY.

1. DTY

DTY for Draw Textured Yarn. It is made by intertwining single fibers through a process involving compressed air. It results in long strands with periodic network points. These fibers often have some elasticity and shrinkage. By combining network and DTY technologies, manufacturers create low-elasticity network yarns. It not only has the fluffy characteristics of textured yarns but also exhibits good elasticity and density. So it can reduce the need for several textile processing steps.

2. FDY

Its full name is Drawn Yarn. FDY is produced by introducing stretching during the spinning process. It results in yarn with high orientation and moderate crystallinity. FDY fabrics have a smooth and soft feel, making them popular in clothing and home textiles. Unlike DTY, FDY fibers are fully stretched during production. So it can be directly used in textile processing.

3. POY

POY is a Partially Oriented Yarn. It is spun at high speeds, resulting in a yarn with orientation between that of undrawn and fully drawn fibers. It has a certain level of stability and is often used as specialized yarn in processes like drawing texturing.

4. Difference among DTY, FDY and POY

From appearance, DTY fibers are curly, while POY and FDY fibers are straight. FDY generally has better strength compared to POY, although POY still holds up well. FDY is produced in one step of spinning and stretching, while DTY undergoes texturing to give it its fluffy appearance. POY requires additional processing after spinning to gain textile properties.

So, each type of yarn has its unique characteristics and applications in the world of textiles. Whether it’s for clothing, home furnishings, or industrial uses, these differences can help in choosing the right material for the job.
